It is a collection of images that I took at civilian war victim

hospitals in Afghanistan this summer. The agency that built the

hospitals is called "EMERGENCY". The surgeon who founded

EMERGENCY will speak at the exhibit. His name is Gino Strada. He's been

doing work in the most dangerous, war-torn places on earth for the last

twenty years. (You may know his book "Green Parrots: A War Surgeon's

Journal".)

Tribe Taksim (bellydance troupe) with Ishtar (middle eastern

musicians) will perform, and Jimmy Cvetic will do spoken word, too!

Bring your camera for sure!

On September 1, 2006 Pittsburgh lost it's mayor, Bobby O'Connor.

Though he had only been in office 6 months, he'd spent a lifetime

winning the heart of the city one person at a time. He'd been a

council member since 91. I remember him standing at the corner of

Second Avenue the day before the 91 election with one of his campaign

posters waving at the rush hour commuters. The I remember him the

day AFTER the elections standing in the same spot with a big sign that

said "THANK YOU". That image stayed with me.

When there was a sniper scare in downtown Pittsburgh he put on a

flack jacket and went to rescue his wife who was in the "red

zone". That image stayed with me.

On September 2 I saw this sign on a fence in the Greenfield

neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Today I went back to photograph

it. Since the sign was put up people spontaneously added flowers

and a big shamrock. While I was photographing it a 20-something

man from the pizza shop across the street came out with zip-ties to

repair a corner that had come loose. I asked him if he made the

tribute. He said that the guys over at Soldiers and Sailors did.

Another young man walked past. He was wearing a "Bob O'Connor"

bracelet. He had walked down because he heard about the

sign.

O'Connor left the city a better place.

Next Level Fighting held an event at the Spot Bar on Saturday night,

July 29. It had that gritty "old-timey" backroom feel to it

that is lost on so many of the slick events held today. I

helped coordinate the event so there wasn't much time to shoot. I got a

few off though. Boyz were bangin!!

In the Spring I did a documentary on the 48th Brigade's train up for

duty in Iraq. This weekend I sat down and put together a slide show for

the folks overt here. They are half way through their mission

The soundtrack is by a band called Soulscript (Soulscript.com).

I got permission to use their music--which is important! Photographers,

musicians, illustrators, and all artists should get credit for their

work...and it is the LEGAL way to use it.

I shot over 1000 images for the documentary. It was interesting

trimming it down for this show. I focused on the portraits rather

than situational shots.
